Strong yet Lightweight Steel Garage Doors

Steel Garage Doors

Various materials are used to make garage doors, notably those made from steel. Steel garage doors by us at Chateau Doors are very popular because of the substance’s strength vs its lightweight characteristic – an essential feature of this wonder material, steel.

Early Heavy, Hard-to-Handle Steel Garage Doors

Largely due to their size, thickness, and strength, early steel garage doors were heavy, cumbersome, and hard-to-handle products – characteristics which became very evident when opening or closing the door, particularly manually. Additionally, operation of a very heavy steel garage door would place extra strain on the product’s torsion springs and its motor.

Garage Door Material Choices

Most sought-after garage doors today are made of wood, aluminium or Chromadek, or steel. Wood is the heaviest of these materials, while modern steel is less unwieldy or heavy.

At Chateau Doors, we supply, install, service, repair, and replace garage doors made of all popular materials, in a variety of attractive, eye-catching designs with which to enhance and complement your property. Now, however, we focus on steel garage doors.

Strong, Durable Steel

Steel, today the stalwart of umpteen industries and applications, is produced by combining iron and carbon at exceptionally high temperatures, typically above 1427 °C. There are two basic methods of producing steel – primary and secondary.

The basic primary making of steel transforms pig iron (smelted iron from ore) from its natural state into the product we know as steel. Smelted pig iron contains more carbon than is normal for steel. Through a specialised oxidation process, excess carbon is removed.

Secondary production of steel refines and adds various elements to the molten steel in order to create a specific alloy. During the finishing process, steel is cast into various forms, ranging from sheets, ingots, bars, and billets to wires.

Through hot-rolling or cold-rolling and heat-treating processes, various shapes and finishes may be created. Heat treatment influences steel’s behaviour in various applications, one of which is the manufacture of strong, durable, relatively lightweight, and cost-effective steel garage doors.

Long Gone are the Erstwhile Days

Long gone are the days of heavy, unwieldly steel garage doors. Modern processes ensure that the weight of steel garage doors isn’t excessive. Today’s high-quality steel doors are relatively lightweight, without sacrificing the doors’ essential properties, such as:

  • Robustness
  • Durability
  • Toughness
  • Yield and tensile strength
  • Malleability

These are amongst the qualities and characteristics that are essential to produce cost-effective, long-lasting, and perfectly performing steel garage doors that are remarkably lightweight and easy to operate, especially when motorised.
